Wildfires

June 29, 2013 coloradogirl

If you had been in our mountain valley the past few weeks, you probably would have mostly heard people talking about the fires. It has been very hot and dry and fires are popping up all over Colorado. For the last few weeks we have had fires on either side of the valley.

One fire is called the East Peak Fire. It is about 72 miles to the east of us.

The other is really 3 fires burning close together, they call it the West Fork Complex Fire, it is about 50 miles to the west of us.

This one has kept the highway closed for about 8 days now and had an entire town evacuated. Last Friday, the firefighters were worried the entire town of South Fork would burn up, but they have worked hard and kept the flames away from town and people are getting to go back home today although they need to stay ready to leave again just in case.

Here are a couple more pictures taken from up above the fire.

This one is a picture from NASA of the fire seen in space.

The fire has been moving fast because a lot of the pine trees in the mountains have been killed by beetles. Hopefully, the winds will stay calm and we will get some rain soon to get these fires put out for good.
